Laboratories of Paleomagnetism Group

Staff of this group has developed and implemented several paleomagnetic and rock magnetic properties techniques in the Paleomagnetism Laboratory. Additionally, a section of this group is actually developing natural radioactive techniques.

Paleomagnetism Laboratory

In this Lab different instruments are used to measure the magnetic properties of rocks and other materials. There are several spinning magnetometers Molspin and JR, vibrating sampling magnetometers Princeton and Molspin. Several thermal and AC demagnetizers as well as pulse magnetizers. Several susceptibilimeters Bartington, Molspin and KLY; the first one is able for measuring high temperature susceptibility and the other two for room temperature anisotropy of susceptibility measurements.

Facilities of this Lab are distributed in several areas: The "Pozo", Principal Building and Anexo Building.

Natural Radioactivity and Activation Laboratory

This Lab has a system for scintillation detection and a multichannel analyzer of 4k with an access capability for 60 detectors that are enough for a nucleoelectric plant. In this Lab is determined the natural radioactivity that has the rocks, soils and water, as well as the identification of different radio-isotopes that produce such radiation. In the next future it will be possible dating recent geologic materials with an U-Th methodology of neutron activation.
