Digital Cartography
The Digital Cartography Laboratory is a research group at the Institute of Geophysics,
UNAM that specializes in geologic applications of remote sensing techniques.

ICP-MS
This Lab has a VGElemental
mass spectrometer PQ3 and a preparation
sample room with pure air system (10,000 particles/m3). The analytical technique
is able to determine trace and ultra-trace (ppb and ppt) elements in geologic
and other materials (rocks, sediments, soils, water, etc.). The Lab gives service
to Geophysics Institute internal and external research projects.
University Laboratory of Isotopic Geochemistry
University laboratory supported by the Geophysical and Geological
Institutes. Its main analytical goal is quantitative determination of mayor
and trace elements of rocks and minerals as well as high precision measurements
of isotopic relations. In order to fulfill this goal, the laboratory has a set
of laboratories and facilities that involves several techniques such as mineral
separation, ultra pure chemical laboratories, X Rays fluorescence (Siemmens
spectrometer) and mass spectrometry (Finnigan and Micromass spectrometers).
This facilities are available to researchers from the National University involved
in related projects and as well to other national or foreign institutions.

Paleomagnetism Laboratory
In this Lab diverse instruments are used to measure the magnetic properties
of rocks and other materials. There are several spinning magnetometers Molspin
and JR, vibrating sampling magnetometers Princeton and Molspin. Several thermal
and AC demagnetizers as well as pulse magnetizers. Several susceptibilimeters
Bartington, Molspin and KLY;
the first one able for high temperature measurements and the other two able
for anisotropy of susceptibility measurements.

Paleolimnology Laboratory
Lacustrine sediments recovered from the bottom of modern and former lakes
are stored and analyzed in this laboratory. Several techniques have been implemented
to recover biological remains from these sediments, mainly diatoms and ostracods,
which are used as paleolimnological and paleoclimatic proxies. The study of
the sediments includes several routine analyses such as stratigraphic description,
photography, loss on ignition and preparation of samples for dating, grain size
analysis, x-ray diffraction, etc.
This lab is part of the Paleoenvironmental Research University Group, whose
main goal is the study of past Climatic Change in Mexico during the Quaternary.
The other two laboratories in this group are: Rock Magnetism (part of the Laboratory
of Paleomagnetism in Geophysics Institute) and Palinology (in the Geological
Institute)
Natural Radioactivity Laboratory.
Cuenta con un sistema de detección por centelleo y analizador multicanal
de 4k con capacidad de acceso para 60 detectores que son suficientes para una
planta núcleoeléctrica. En este laboratorio se determina la radiactividad
natural que poseen las rocas, suelos y aguas, así como la identificación
de los diferentes radioisótopos que producen dicha radiación en
un futuro próximo se empezara a hacer fechamiento de material geológico
joven mediante el método de uranio-torio y análisis por activación
con neutrones.
Laboratory of Thermo-Luminescense.
In this Lab it is studied the thermo-luminescence phenomena applied to dating
materials, based on the radio isotopes 238U, 232Th and 40K and considering the
cosmic contribution. With this method several geologic materials can be dated
such as sediments, lava flows, paleodunes, paleosoils, as well as some archaeological
materials as pottery, ceramic figures and bricks. In the latest cases it can
be used as authenticity tests.
