Paleomagnetism Laboratory, Rock
Magnetism section.
In this section of the Paleomagnetism Laboratory
are carried on studies in order to determinate the magnetic properties
of rock samples, sediments, soils, archaeological materials and other
related materials. The objective of such studies are determine the magnetic
mineralogy and the concentration and size of magnetic grains. The Lab
has several systems for measuring the magnetic susceptibility (Bartington,
Molspin and KLY2), systems for measuring this susceptibility at different
temperatures and vibration magnetometers.

Sedimentology Laboratory of Superficial
Formations.
This Lab has two automatic equipments (controlled
by computer systems) for particle size analysis: (1) A particle separator
with vibrator, analytical balance and a set of sieves, for dry or wet
samples with particle size between 4 to 0.004 mm and a dry weight of 200
gr. (2) A Laser technology equipment for dust analysis and suspended samples.
for particle size between 1 to 100 micrometers and samples of a weight
of 0.1 gr.
The lab also has a GIDDINGS rotatory corer equipment, for sampling of
non consolidated sediments up to 30 meters depth.
